This is pretty fun! It’s cool they got everyone to play along. I really like the Silence of the Lambs photo. I think Tom Cruise should have done Top Gun instead of Minority Report.

You’re right on the tom cruise thing. Either Top Gun or Mission: Impossible would have been better. I’m just really glad there was no sign of Twilight anywhere lol.

And who the hell remembers Minority Report? Hell, stick him in a wheelchair as Born On The Fourth Of July – not no Minority Report.

I feel like you guys are missing the point, of course these people are incredibly famous and don’t deserve a mistake like visible gaff tape (1 shoot only) or background. I feel the photographer is attempting to remind the viewer of each actor that made their role so memorable rather than trying to immerse you into memories of the character itself

I agree with George. There have got to be more influential women in film than Kiera Knightly and the girl from Harry Potter. That’s a real issue with this project.

The “poorly done” picture style just may be the way that they intended it to be. Everyone has a different way of taking pictures, and maybe that was what they wanted it to be like. To me, it makes it seem as if they are taking the pictures on a movie set, or something along those lines. I could see it being done on purpose. You never know.

I agree people are getting too gripey about the pictures themselves. They also seem to be ignoring the “Celebrating 20 years of Movie Magic” or they just don’t know how long 20 years is. Top Gun came out in 1986 – several people have pointed this out already – which is over the 20 year mark. In that context, Minority Report is Cruise’s most well known movie, aside from Mission Impossible. It probably would have been too difficult to convey who he was portraying without rigging a harness and suspending him from the air.

As for Michael Sheen (the second picture), he played Tony Blair in The Queen. As for Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, regardless of your own personal opinion, Shaun of the Dead is a highly popular and memorable movie.

And I think Jack Nicholson is reprising his character from As Good As It Gets.

Current score: 2

open debate bring it on!

04.19.11 7:35 am

Come on people do you really think it is that great? I have a lot of respect for the actors (some more than others) but regarding the art direction it is poor and so predictable. If that wasn’t for the actors this would not work at all. Imagine in the same serie a picture of your granny…..well I know a guy in the post office of Kentish Town Hight street in London that can do better..

I think it would be nice if they put the original poses from the movies next to the new ones, so we could see how the actors (and actresses) have changed. And because I’m not a movie buff and haven’t seen all of these, and have no idea what the pose is supposed to be from.

First of all, that’s MASKING tape not GAFFER’S tape. You don’t use GAFFER’S tape to make a floor marker since it’s BLACK. And secondly if you’re so narrow-minded to criticize a photo because it’s not exactly as your textbook-definition “portraits” are described, then I feel really sorry for your incapability of appreciating artistic merit.

Finally someone who gets it. It’s called “breaking the fourth wall” which is very relevant for this type of shoot, when it’s about actors impersonating themselves in a previous role. It’s basically meta-acting.

You Americans… That masking tape is supposed to be there in the Sean of the Dead picture – it represents a crease on a cricket pitch – hence there is a cricket bat! Cricket – a sport played in most commonwealth countries.

22 men, 3 women and only two people of any color. Yawnnnnnnn.I would’ve really enjoyed this except those little details were just screaming at me in the face. How do other people miss them? According to this, no woman in a lead role (or in any movie for that matter) in the past 20 years deserves the spotlight. The only one here would be Jodie Foster even though she was completely outshone by Anthony Hopkins because he’s well, Anthony Hopkins. Whatever. It’s Empire. Typical.

I also feel the need to comment the lack of female actresses – as well as coloured. Doesn’t this all fit very well in the pattern we show our daughters and sons: Men do valuable things and have the spotlight. Women don’t, so don’t dream, little girl.

Fun pics! Why are people being so negative about them? Who knows who they asked to do the pictures? Maybe everyone wasn’t available? Who cares about the technical aspects of not being a ‘good’ photo? Why are people upset that a particular movie got a photo and another one didn’t? Aren’t there bigger things to worry about than a bunch of photographs done for fun to represent some movies people enjoyed?
Seriously…lighten up.

You guys can go on and on about how they’re missing great female actors or great colored actors, but the fact is, these were still some of the most famous and notable movies from the last twenty years. Stop worrying about equality and fairness for awhile, and just appreciate the project, will you? Not everything has to be a freaking issue.
