The Growth Of Social Media

Social Media is becoming one of the center pieces to our everyday digital life. We are constantly interacting with each other through it, and with the introduction of smart phones the reach of social media has expanded past just the home computer. Now people are connecting while out and about, interacting in real time.
This video produced by Socialnomics author Erik Qualman, shows just how big social media is becoming. The numbers of people on these networks is amazing, and the connections made through them are even more astounding.
For advertisers, and brands – the facts are starting to pile up and there is a major shift happening in the advertising world, with companies devoting more and more of their budgets to online, and social media vs traditional.
Facebook has been collecting data on it’s users for quite some time, and every day it is collecting more and more. This data is now starting to make its way around the internet to other sites, on CNN.com now I can see how my friends are interacting with the site. Is this starting to become an almost big brother scenario, or is this just the beginning of an open world with data and information shared to bring us all together and make life easier?
What are your thoughts on social media, is it good? bad? Where do you see things going in the future?
